‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Merlin the Magician’ - Chapterhouse Theatre Company
I spent summer 2009 on the road with Chapterhouse Theatre Company, playing Lady Capulet in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and a multi-role actor-musician line of parts including Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, in family show ‘Merlin the Magician’.
It was a three-month open-air tour performing at some stunning venues and taking us all over the UK and Ireland. Very much a hands-on team effort, the cast were responsible for get-ins and outs of the sizable set as well as driving and navigation, and we were certainly kept busy. It was however an incredible experience, both when blessed with beautiful weather and a perfect setting, and also battling wind, rain and other difficulties inherent to playing in non-theatre spaces, when our hardy audiences invariably got behind us and lent their encouragement and support.
The Company: Anna Westlake, Chris Upton, David DeGiorgio, Edwin Wright, Emily Juler, Gareth Moore, Greg Patmore, Kasia Halpin, Peter Phillipson, Stephanie Willson, Tomas Loftus.
‘Many roles were doubled up… but the performances did not suffer for it. If anything, I was doubly impressed at the sheer talent on display.
Small cast or not, Chapterhouse Theatre Company showed the enthusiasm and professionalism of a company three times its size – and I'm willing to bet that such a company wouldn't cope with continual showers in the same nonchalant way.’
