‘White Lights’
September saw me returning to the Alma Tavern in Bristol to work with resident company Theatre West on the opening play of their 2009 ten-week season of new writing, ‘White Lights’ by Mike Akers. Set in an ailing modern-day local supermarket, the play centred on my character, checkout attendant Holly, trying to cope with strange pre-shift occurrences as the store marks the Mexican Day of the Dead…
The downturn takes its toll on a small supermarket chain and area management resort to desperate measures, but the Day of the Dead promotion brings unexpected visitors through the automatic doors. For checkout operative Holly and store manager Martin the shift from hell is about to change their lives forever. Mike Akers’ comedy brings a whole new meaning to the phrase retail therapy.
